Presented at the 1814 Salon this painting did not meet with the same success as the Charging Chasseur of 1812 with which he made his debut. In fact. the cuirassier was highly criticized for the overly long proportions of the soldier, and especially for the agitated brushstroke that left the painting looking “unfinished” almost a sketch. The subject of retreat after defeat probably referred to Napoleon’s defeat at the hands of the English and European armies. In the Restoration climate David’s language of utmost attention to even the tiniest detail was back in vogue and the public was not ready to accept such an “unfinished” painting as Géricault’s.
